TRAVEL SAFE IN VAL DI FASSA BY MOUNTAIN LIFTS

How to behave on cable cars, GONDOLA lifts and chairlifts

Standards and rules of conduct for safe skiing

In case of need, assistance and rescue services are active on the ski slopes, managed directly by the Police Forces. There is also a extensive network of pharmacies, first aid stations and medical clinics throughout the Val di Fassa territory to guarantee skiers and snowboarders timely medical interventions. Remember also that in the event of avalanche risk, some slopes may remain closed for safety reasons.

As for the basic rules to be observed at high altitude, we recall:

  • Mandatory insurance

As of last January 2022, a fundamental change was introduced for all those who frequent the ski slopes: the obligation to have valid insurance, that covers civil liability for damage or injury caused to third parties.

This means that skiers and snowboarders will have to carry a copy, either paper or digital, of the skiers' liability insurance policy at all times during their sporting activities. People without such insurance will be fined between 100 € and 150 € and will be subject to having their ski pass confiscated.

Possessing skier liability insurance, therefore, is not only mandatory, but it also represents a manifestation of good sense toward oneself and others. Spending a day at altitude, in total safety, is not taken for granted: accidents can happen all the time, which is why it is best to arrive on the slopes prepared.

Finally, it is important to remember that having legally required insurance does not exempt us from downhill skiing or snowboarding with caution and responsibility, following the basic rules of respect for others.

  • Respect for others
Skiers and snowboarders have an obligation to keep responsible behavior that does not damage other people. Keep a speed appropriate to your technical abilities, respect distances and choose suitable trajectories away from possible obstacles.
  • Alcohol consumption
It is strictly forbidden to ski while intoxicated as a result of the use of alcoholic beverages (where, by analogy, the Highway Code limits of 0.5 mg of alcohol per liter of blood will be applied) and toxic substances. Competent authorities may carry out checks on the slopes.
  • Helmet requirement
Wearing a protective helmet is compulsory for those under 18 years of age who ski downhill, freestyle, freeride, snowboard, telemark, sled or toboggan. However, its use is strongly recommended for everyone to reduce the consequences of any head injury. The helmet must be approved in accordance with European standard UNI EN 1077 and have the CE-certified mark stamped on it.
  • Speed and choice of direction
The skier or snowboarder in front always has the right of way. Therefore, moderate your speed in sections with limited vision and/or on crowded slopes, near obstacles, intersections and bifurcations, in fog or poor visibility, in bottlenecks, in the presence of beginners, children and disabled people on aids. Keep a direction that allows you to avoid collisions or that does not interfere with the skier downstream. When entering or crossing a slope, make sure you can do so without causing harm to yourself or others by checking both upstream and downstream. Observe and obey signs and markings for danger, slowing down, narrow passage, and closure. Please note that the various degrees of difficulty of the slopes are indicated, in descending order, by the colors "black," "red," "blue," and "green."
  • Overtaking on the slope
Before overtaking another skier, make sure you have room and good visibility. You can overtake on either the right or left, but remember to give the person you are overtaking enough room, even if stopped on the slope.
  • Stopping on the slope
Don't stop in the middle of the track, in forced passages or where there is a lack of wide visibility. In case of a crash, try to reach an edge of the track as quickly as possible. Absolutely avoid stopping where the track is very narrow, near bumps or curves. Entering the slope or restarting after a stop is a situation that often causes accidents: always pay close attention to those coming upstream.
  • Going up and down a ski slope
It is prohibited both to walk down ski slopes and to ascend them with skis on. Where allowed, ascending on skis should be done only at the edge of the slope. It is also forbidden to ride on the ski slopes outside the hours when they are open to the public. The use of skibobs/snowbikes is prohibited on all slopes in Val di Fassa and Trentino.
  • Obligation to rescue
If you come across an injury while downhill, you have an obligation to help the persons involved in the accident and to contact the single emergency number 112 or the staff present on the slope. Try to cordon off the area of the accident and report the presence of the injured person to those on the slope.
  • Identification
If you are involved in an accident or witness an accident, you have an obligation to provide your personal details to the responding rescue personnel.
  • Obligation of safety device to prevent detachment of equipment
Remember to use only skis and snowboards equipped with safety devices capable of preventing the detachment of equipment that could pose a danger to the safety of people on the slope. Our rentals provide only equipment in good standing.
  • Obligation to store equipment
When you stop for a break at a lodge or other premises, place your equipment off the skiable surface so that it does not get in the way or endanger other people. In particularly crowded places, it is advisable to equip yourself with a padlock.
